Pickering - Silas

Source: Darlington Herald 3-1-1918 p 1

Silas M. Pickering, who for a number of years had been in the employ of the Carl Scott Park Farms at Linnsburg died almost instantly following a fall from a load of hay last Friday morning. His neck was broken by the fall. Silas M. Pickering, youngest son of Ellis and Mary A. Pickering, was born on the 3rd day of July in 1869. He died Feb 23, 1918 at the age of 48 years, 7 months 20 days. The cause of his death was accidental, resulting from a fall from a load of hay. His entire life was spent in the counties of Montgomery and Boone, where he has many friends, who were shocked to hear of the sad circumstances connected with his death. He was united in marriage to Minnie F. Reichard October 9, 1882 (sic - but think 1892?). To this union two sons were born. Howard Cecil, aged 24 who is now stationed at Camp Shelby at Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Brazier Merle, aged 14 who is at home. Besides his wife and two sons he leaves to mourn his death 3 brothers and 4 sisters: Harvey of Carlyle, Mont; Ezra of near Darlington; Oliver of near Thorntown; Mrs. Annie Snyder of near Waynetown; Mrs. Sarah Engle of near Darlington; Mrs. Emma Drollinger of Darlington and Mrs. Rea Nelson of Linden. His father, mother and one sister, Mrs. Delilah Decker having preceded him to their heavenly home. At an early age he united with the Friend's Church and has remained a consistent member of that church throughout life. In all his dealings with his fellow men he was always found honest and upright. He was not of the type who boasts of their good qualities but he chose rather to practice them in his quiet way. Let us seek to emulate his good qualities in our lives and pass over those few imperfections. The funeral services were held at the Christian Church at Linnsburg and were in charge of the pastor of that church, Rev. Kibby. Interment was made at Greenlawn Cemetery in Darlington. The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased. -- kbz
